Visit San Antonio: Communications, January 2019

Though the holiday season cut into media coverage and activities, it was a busy and strong month for the Visit San Antonio Communications team. San Antonio has made it into three lists of Must Visit Destinations in 2019: from Frommer’s, Forbes and O – The Oprah Magazine. These accolades are a continued recognition of San Antonio’s growing national presence as a travel destination.

One of the top priorities for the past couple of years has been working with social media influencers to produce editorial (non-paid) coverage of San Antonio. This is increasingly important as more and more travelers are obtaining travel inspiration from social channels and as traditional media channels are consolidating. In December, Visit San Antonio collaborated with Danielle Finest of Toronto Foodies (@TOFoodies) as she explored and covered the destination. She produced more than 100 Instagram Stories posts and eight main posts.

December means it’s marathon time, and we welcomed a trio of Mexican celebrity social media influencers. Inaki Alvarez, Pablo Gil and Monica Gomez participated in the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio Marathon and experienced our city in a unique, active lifestyle-focused manner. After hosting Mexico national morning show “Sal el Sol” for filming in November, a pair of segments featuring San Antonio aired the week before Christmas. The segments focused on our city’s entertainment, culinary and family-friendly experiences and highlighted host hotel Drury Inn & Suites, San Antonio Zoo, Topgolf, iFly, Go Rio, the Spurs, La Gloria, Botika, Pearl and The Saga.

On the domestic front, we had the first of a series of activities in Austin. Through our research, Visit San Antonio has identified the Capital City as a growing source of visitors and we are looking for ways to help increase their numbers in the near future as we look at need periods. In mid-December, we hosted a get-to-know-you session for Austin-based media and social media influencers, so they could learn about all that is popular and new in San Antonio. Thanks to our partners at Bakery Lorraine, Seersucker Southern Style Gin and Jason Dady Restaurants for partnering with us in this kick-off event.
