TTIA Study Tour

Nov. 4-5

Staff hosted the Texas Travel Industry Association’s (TTIA) annual Study Tour. This year’s tour covered South Texas and the Gulf Coast Region, which included traveling to 16 cities over a five-day period. The TTIA Study Tour began in 1975 and is designed to give the Texas Department of Transportation Information Center Counselors first-hand knowledge of the tourist facilities and activities that our region has to offer. The more than 20 attendees were from all over Texas and enjoyed the Broadway Cultural Corridor, Museum Reach, downtown and King William District.  These partners gave fantastic highlights that these counselors could use to provide information to visitors with whom they interact. Many of the visitors they serve are traveling by car and include vacationing families and older adults, including groups who often are not reached through social media and online marketing.  In addition, these travel counselors are required to write a trip report that will be used to train those counselors at their visitor centers who were not able to be a part of the study tour.  If you are interested in more information about the TTIA Study tour, please contact Francisco Gallegos at

World Travel Market

The United Kingdom is the largest source of overseas visitors to Texas.  WTM is the largest and most important travel trade show in the UK; it also attracts travel trade professionals and media from throughout Europe and around the world.  Tourism Development staff met with UK Tour Operators, Airlines and new technology firms to discuss opportunities to reach new and existing audiences in an effort to increase travel to the destination for coming years.  We will continue the conversation for strategic planning and reach out to key partners as developments occur.  In addition, staff meet with the U.S. International Trade Administration to continue discussions on identifying co-branding opportunities in Europe. State of Texas Germany Sales Mission

In cooperation with the office of the Governor Tourism Office, Visit San Antonio participated in the Sales and Media Mission following WTM London.  Staff met with the tourism product managers and sales staff in Frankfurt and Cologne to discuss future opportunities and to educate them on the destination.  In addition, staff participated in a promising airline headquarter meeting that has the potential of a new trans-Atlantic flight. United Airlines UK Tour Operator Familiarization Trip

Travel Texas and United Airlines, along with Visit San Antonio and other Texas cities, coordinated a FAM to showcase our destinations.  The trip focused predominantly on sales team staff to experience the product prior to peak trading, so Texas and its partners were at the forefront of destination ideas. The trip also included clients that were from Product Management and Marketing Executive teams from their prospective companies. UK companies represented were from North American Travel Services, Premier Holidays, TravelBag, Hayes and Jarvis, Trailfinders and Funway.  The FAM was led by the United Airlines UK Account Manager of Leisure Sales, as well as the Texas Tourism Rep Agency.  The areas visited in San Antonio focused on history, arts and culture and gave the attendees a better understanding of the diversity of the destination.  If you are interested in more information about the European market, please contact Francisco Gallegos at

¡La Música Te Hace Volar a San Antonio!

Tourism Development staff continues with its approach to promote San Antonio as an ideal destination to enjoy great entertainment.  Research has shown that major concerts and entertainment provide another reason for visitors from Mexico to travel to San Antonio.  Staff has collaborated with Mexico airlines, Spurs Sports & Entertainment and the ATT Center, local hotel partners and destination attractions to develop promotional getaway sweepstake campaigns. Aeromexico and Interjet used their extensive social media channel reach to promote the sweepstakes and drove participation with destination hashtags and trivia questions.  The most recent sweepstakes promoted the Maroon 5 and Shakira concerts. The combined results from these campaigns resulted in 900,000 impressions via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and, of course, one lucky winner.  If you are interested in learning more about these types of promotions, please contact Sal Garza at
