Visit San Antonio & City of San Antonio: Senate Affairs Committee, Friday, July 21, 2017

On Friday, July 21, Casandra Matej, President and CEO of Visit San Antonio, San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg, Assistant City Manager, Mike Sawaya and San Antonio Chamber of Commerce President, Richard Perez testified in front of the Senate State Affairs Committee in Austin regarding the known and potential economic impact of SB 3 (The "Bathroom Bill") on meetings, conventions and business in our city.

Casandra Matej outlined the significant damage this bill would have on our hospitality and travel industry, and referred to the Perryman Group report that was commissioned by Visit San Antonio and the San Antonio Tourism Council. The Perryman Group report can be viewed here. Mayor Nirenberg testified that the bill is counter to our city's welcoming and diverse culture and provided the Committee with a letter from Police Chief McManus indicating there had never been a transgender bathroom assault in our community. The Mayor also reiterated support from the business community, including Chambers of Commerce throughout the city. Mike Sawaya testified to the detrimental impact the bill would have on our ability to attract events to convention and sports facilities.
