Visit San Antonio News: Destination Group Sales & Services, June 2017

The Destination Group Sales Division confirmed 99,044 total room nights in the month of May. This includes confirming the American Occupational Therapy Association for their Annual Conference & Expo in April of 2022, which will bring in over 10,000 attendees. Also, the team confirmed the American Health Information Management Association for their Annual Convention & Exhibit for October 2026, which will bring in over 5,000 attendees as well.

In June, our convention team attended three large industry conferences. The first in June was the PCMA Education Conference. This event was in New York City this year and included educational opportunities focused on industry trends. This event allowed our sales managers to sit side by side with our meeting planning customers as they gained valuable business knowledge together. The following week we attended MPI’s World Education Congress. This event was in conjunction with our Synchronicities partners and also offered educational sessions, as well as networking opportunities. Toward the end of the month, Association Forum hosted their annual Forum Forward and Honors Gala in Chicago. There we honored industry achievements from throughout the year.

During the month of July, Visit San Antonio will participate in Destination Marketing Association International’s (DMAI) Annual Convention in Montreal. This event is a great program for insight into industry trends and new marketing opportunities and strategies among destinations across the globe. Please go to our Partners website (partners.visitsanantonio.com) to see partnership opportunities for these events.

The job of Destination Services begins, at minimum, 12 months in advance of an actual meeting in San Antonio.  In the case of most citywide conventions, we may begin with a prior-year promotion in another city.  In May we had a presence at the National Postal Forum (NPF) National Convention in Baltimore, MD.  Our goal in attending a prior-year meeting is twofold: 1) Create excitement about next year’s convention in San Antonio, and 2) gain intelligence that will help us be more successful in the following year.

At the NPF promotion, potential attendees were given the opportunity to experience a river barge ride via virtual reality goggles.

Let the games begin!  NCAA will begin monthly site visits beginning in June for Final Four 2018 planning.  June was dedicated to meetings and site visits with hotels.
