Legislative Call to Action: School Start Date

Colleagues and Partners,

Tomorrow a critical bill will go in front of the Public Education Committee. HB 620 proposes the school year begin on the 2nd Monday in August. Not the 4th Monday in August as currently mandated by law.

Why does this matter to you?

1.  HB 620 will have a negative economic impact on the travel industry

  • A 2013 Perryman Group study estimates a state-wide potential $800 million negative economic impact and an estimated loss of 5800 jobs

2.  Current law is sound public policy.

  • Data does not illustrate student achievement has suffered due to the uniform school start date of the 4th Monday in August; graduation and testing scores have all risen

3. Texas voters do not support earlier school start date.

  • A 2015 Wilson Perkins poll conducted of registered voters in Texas shows that more than 85% of respondents think that public schools start too early or believe the fourth Monday in August is the right time to begin the school year
