Visit San Antonio: Communications, September 2017

August marked the grand finale of Visit San Antonio’s summer media blitz with media calls and events in New York City. The Communications team met with media, including Skift, Worth, Parents, Redbook, Samantha Brown Media, Travel + Leisure and Departures, to talk about what’s new and popular in the destination. We partnered with Chef Johnny Hernandez to host a takeover of the cafes at the Time Inc. and Condé Nast buildings, where more than 400 editors, writers and other staff got to taste and hear about San Antonio. Condé Nast is home to Bon Appétit, Glamour, Brides, Self, Vanity Fair, Condé Nast Traveler, GQ, Epicurious and many others, while Time Inc. publishes Food & Wine, Departures, Fortune, Sports Illustrated, People and Real Simple. This unique activation sparked many conversations about San Antonio across a wide variety of publications that should lead to great coverage in the months to come.

In addition to the ongoing media conversations and group media hosting, the Communications team also participates in constant media pitching and occasional individual media hosting. Individual media visits during August included Upscale Magazine, Texas Highways, OutClique Magazine and V de Volaris Magazine. In August, one of the key pitches was talking to media about how San Antonio is a key destination for accessibility and travel for families with members who may have special needs. There have already been a few major media stories that have resulted from this pitch, including a radio interview with Dallas radio station News Talk WBAP for the Travel With Hawkeye show.

In late August Visit San Antonio partnered with AeroMexico to host a group of top entertainment and lifestyle-focused media from Mexico, including Quién, Golf & Spa Magazine, The Happening and Cosas. The group explored the wide array of entertainment and cultural attractions in our city, including tours of the Tobin Center, the Majestic & Empire Theatres, The Witte Museum, Morgan’s Wonderland; a concert at the AT&T Center; and experiences at Haunt Lounge, Paramour Bar, Topgolf and Pearl. This trip’s theme reinforces Visit San Antonio’s messaging as a fun, authentic and friendly destination for our important Mexico market. Coverage has already started to appear and will continue providing exposure for San Antonio over the following year.

Last weekend, Volaris Airlines launched new direct flights from Mexico City. In celebration and support of the new flight, Visit San Antonio partnered with Volaris to welcome a group of travel trade operators and top news media from September 15-18 to experience the best the destination and region has to offer. The group experienced the Mexican heritage that is rooted deeply in our city’s culture, including the traditional “El Grito” event that took place at Market Square. Check back next month for the group’s reactions to San Antonio’s destination offerings.

Earlier in the month, Visit San Antonio took a proactive approach in informing visitors of the destination leading up to and following Hurricane Harvey. While San Antonio was lucky in receiving minimal damage from the storm, the destination did an excellent job in preparing for it and keeping guests informed of options. After the storm passed, Visit San Antonio continued inviting visitors to enjoy the destination and take their minds off their worries with our entertaining and relaxing offerings.

With the start of the new fiscal year around the corner, we’ll be launching a renewed cycle of media pitching, market blitzes and missions, as well as incoming media FAMs. Be sure to check here and for individual emails from the Communications team for opportunities to participate. The new fiscal year also means the start of new agency relationships, the team looks forward to collaborating with The Atkins Group and its PR agency partners to help keep the momentum of awareness growth.

The first group media familiarization tour of the fiscal year will be October 19-22. The tour will focus on the destination’s cultural offerings as well as offer media a preview of what’s to come for the Tricentennial celebrations. If you haven’t made your celebration event plans yet, be sure to do so, and let the Visit San Antonio team know so your event can be included in media conversations!
